むかしむかし、あるところ に、いちわ の メンドリ が いました。
　Once upon a time, there was a hen.

「ごちそうだよ。みんな おいで」
“It's my treat, everyone. Come over here.”

　メンドリ は いつも にわ を つっついて、エサ を みつけては ヒヨコたち に たべさせていました。
　The hen always pecked the garden and fed the baby chicks.

　あるひ、メンドリ は こむぎつぶ が おちているのを みつけました。
　One day, the hen found some wheat grains.

「これ を まくと、たくさん こむぎ が できるのよ。
“If you plant them, a lot of wheat will grow.

　ふやしてから たべましょう」
　Let’s make a lot of them and eat,”

　メンドリ は、おおきなこえ で いいました。
　said the hen in a loud voice.

「こむぎ の タネ を まくの。だれか、てつだって ちょうだい」
“Can anyone help me plant seeds of wheat?”

　でも、いけ で あそんでいた アヒル は、
　However, a duck playing on the pond said,

「ごめんよ、わたし は いそがしいんだから」
“Sorry, I’m busy now.”

と、ことわりました。
　She declined.

　ブタ は、ねむそう に め を あけましたが、
　A pig looked sleepy opened his eyes.

「あー、あー、あー」
“YAWN！”

　あくび を しただけで、しらぬかお です。
　He just yawned pretending not to hear anything.

　ひなたぼっこ の ネコ も、くぶ を ふって。
　The cat basking in the sun also shook her head and said,

「いま、よう が あるのよ」
“I’m in the middle of something.”

　だれ も てつだって くれない ので、メンドリ は ひとり で こむぎ の タネ を まきました。
　Since no one wouldn't help, the hen planted the seeds of wheat by herself.

　やがて こむぎ が、たくさん みのりました。
　After a while, a lot of wheat grew.

　そこで メンドリ は、みんな を よびました。
　Then the hen asked everyone,

「こむぎ を、かりとるの。だれか、てつだって ちょうだい」
“Can anyone help me harvest the wheat?”

　すると アヒル は、
　Then,

「いま、およぎ を ならっている ところ」
“I’m learning how to swim now.

と、いいました。
said the duck.

　ブタ は、
　The pig said,

「ぼく、いま は ごちそう を たべているので、いけないの」
“I’m now eating the feast so I can’t come.”

　ネコ は、
　The cat said,

「わたし、けがわ を みがいているの。だめよ」
“I’m polishing my fur so I can’t.”

　しかたなく メンドリ は、ひとり で せっせ と こむぎ を かりとり、こなやさん に もっていきました。
　The hen had no choice but harvest the wheat by herself and then took it to a miller.

　まもなく メンドリ は、まっしろ に なった こな の ふくろ を かついで かえってきました。
　Before long, the hen brought back a pure white bag full of flour.

　そして、おおごえ で いいました。
　The she loudly said,

「おいしい パン を やくのよ。だれか、てつだって ちょうだい」
“I’m baking delicious bread. Can anybody help me?”

　すると、アヒル は、
　The duck said,

「そんな めんどうな こと は、だいきらい」
“I hate such a hassle!”

　ブタ は、
　The pig said,

「そんな しんどい こと は、だいきらい」
“I don’t want to do such a tough job.”

　ネコ は、
　The cat said,

「そんな じゃまくさい こと は、だいきらい」
“I don’t like doing such a bothering thing.”

　だれ も、てつだって くれません。
　No one wouldn’t help her.

　しかたなく メンドリ は、ひとり で パン を やきました。
　The hen ended up baking bread by herself.

　とっても いいかおり の パン が、やきあがりました。
　Later on, savory bread had been baked.

「さあ、こどもたち。パン を たべましょう」
“Now kids, let’s eat the bread.”

　メンドリ と ヒヨコたち が パン を たべはじめます と、みんな が あつまってきました。
　Once the hen and baby chicks started eating, everybody gathered.

　アヒル が、
　The duck said,

「おいしそうね。その パン を、わたし にも くださいな」
“It looks so good. Can I have some?”

　ブタ が、
　The pig said,

「うまそうだな。その パン を、ぼく にも くださいな」
“Looks delicious. I want to have some too.”

　ネコが、
　The cat said,

「いい かおりね。その パン を、わたしにも くださいな」
“Smells good. Please give me some too.”

　すると、メンドリ が いいました。
　Then the hen said,

「いいですよ。
“Sure.

　この パン を つくるの を てつだって くれた ひと から、じゅんばん に あげます。
　I’ll give some to anybody who helps me bake it.

　さあ、だれ が さいしょ に てつだって くれましたか？
　Well, who of you helped me first?”

　それ を きいて、アヒル も ブタ も ネコ も、はずかしそう に かえっていきました。
　On hearing that, the duck, pig, and the cat felt embarrassed and took off.
